Design Philosophy

I believe that context should be the starting point for any built development. Understanding context, while vital, does not mean that design is simply a matter of providing ‘more of the same.’ It is identifying those elements that are vital to the ‘sense of place’ and should be respected but not necessarily replicated. The appreciation and interpretation of context provides the platform on which any successful design rests.

My design approach is based on the belief that practical considerations are as important as aesthetic ones. Ensuring that the layout and form of a new development works for the people who will use it need not however constrain the possibility of creating attractive, vibrant, places.

My background in the private sector means that I fully understand the need for financial and commercial success. It is nevertheless rare that these factors will prevent a good standard of design from being achieved, rather they offer a challenge to which good urban and landscape design can respond positively, giving both client and public a successful development. This should be one that is innovative, attractive, works well and is achievable within the financial parameters given. My aim is to deliver design solutions that meet those criteria.

Experience

I have worked for many years in the fields of urban design, planning, landscape and conservation, disciplines in which I hold both academic and professional qualifications. My career has included both local government and the private sector. I apply this long and varied experience to all of the projects in which I am involved.

I have been an expert witness at a large number of public enquiries. I am one of a small number of professional witnesses who have qualifications that are appropriate to giving evidence on design matters and who can support this with extensive, relevant experience.

I have acted as a team leader in a variety of multi disciplinary teams promoting major development projects. These include large greenfield housing schemes, mixed-use redevelopment of urban sites and vital, major public sector developments. I also have extensive experience of large-scale landscape planning and landscape design projects.

I have twice been a member of a Government Gateway Review Team advising on the progress of the Stonehenge WHS development. Over the years I have published a number of articles and lectured on a variety of urban design, planning, conservation and landscape matters. I am currently the Convenor of the RTPI’s Consultancy Panel. I am also visiting lecturer in landscape design at the University of Plymouth.

Some of the graphics on this website date from my time as the Landscape and Urban Design Director of GL Hearn. I am grateful to the company for allowing me to use them here.
